After the sunrise tour ended, on advise from the tour guide, we decided to take a round trip ride on the Alishan Forest Railway to Shermuh station. She said that since we came to Alishan, it would be a pity if we didn’t experience the Alishan forest train!
The railway was badly damaged by typhoon Morakot in Dec ’09 and since then, it was closed for repair. It was only in Jun ’10 that 2 sections (Jhushan Line and Shermuh Line) were re-opened but the line from Chiayi to Alishan is still inaccessible.

There were a few sculptures in front of the station.

This is the train which we boarded.

We were quite early for the 9am train and the carriage was empty except for us, keke. Inside the train, you can distinctly smell the scent of Cypress (檜木) of which the carriage was constructed with. It is advisable to sit on the carriages further from the engine so as to not inhale the fumes from the engine!

The small train winded through the Alishan Forest and we reached our destination in 10 minutes. Here’s the ticketing booth of Shermuh station. So quaint!

At the station, we simply walked around and took photos until the train made it’s return journey at 9:30am. We saw other visitors leaving to explore the forest on foot.

And, off we went~

That rounds up our trip to Alishan. Here are some photos taken at the Alishan train station area.
Huge wasabi plant – wasabi is one of the local products of Alishan.

There’s a shop + restaurant: Great Beauty of Rihchu (日出有大美) and I loved the design of this place! The 1st storey is a shop selling knick-knacks and the steamboat restaurant is on the 2nd storey. Last night, we took a look at the menu and found the prices for the steamboat quite expensive – guess you are paying for the ambience.
We couldn’t take photos on the inside but the decorations are verycute and pretty. Do go in and see if you are visiting!

Meows~ Next post is on Kaohsiung.
