Japan Trip: Day 11, part 2 (24 Nov 2009)

Off we went to Kasuga Taisha, a shrine in Nara. This shrine is famous for its lanterns that are donated by worshipers.

While approaching the shrine, the path is lined by lanterns on the side. You can also spot some deers amongst the lanterns. Notice the Sogo logo on the 2 lanterns at the bottom right photo? We guessed that those were donated by Sogo, haha.

On some of the lanterns, we noticed remains of a white paper covering the square side openings – you can see it in the middle photo. We presume that they are used whenever the lanterns are lighted up, during the 2 Lantern Festivals, to shield the burning candle within.

Japan Trip: Day 11, part 1 (24 Nov 2009)

Mention Nara and chances are that you will think about its wild deers! Yup, like when we visited Miyajima, there are many deers in this city too.

We alighted at JR Nara station and walked to Kofukuji Temple – the temple grounds are free admission. :)

First, we saw the three-storey pagoda and the Southern Octagonal Hall. There is also a five-storey pagoda which, at a height of 50 meters, is Japan’s second tallest (after Kyoto’s Toji Temple). Beside it is the Eastern Golden Hall.

Bringing to you, the deers in Nara Park! There were many stalls selling deer crackers with which to feed them. No, we didn’t feed the deers here either – I will freak out if many deers crowd around me! Come, see the deers eating crackers!

Oh, and something interesting, at one shop, I saw a sign warning that these crackers taste bad to humans, hahaha. I wonder who would think of taking a bite? Hmm, just thought of this, perhaps that notice might just inspire someone to try and know how bad it tastes? :D
